An Overview of Food Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries from January to May 2025

Customs statistics show that the total value of food trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 3.2 billion from January to May 2025, an increase of 9.6% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, the value of food exported to CEE accounted for RMB 2.44 billion, an increase of 23.4%; the value of food imported from CEE reached RMB 760 million, a decrease of 22.4%.

 

The main features of food trade between China and CEE from January to May 2025 are as follows:

 

(I) The primary exports consist of edible aquatic products, dried and fresh fruits & nuts, vegetables, and edible fungi.

 

China exported RMB 2.44 billion of food to CEE from January to May 2025, with an increase of 23.4%, accounting for 0.7% of the gross export value from China to CEE over the same period. Among them, the value of edible aquatic products reached RMB 470 million, an increase of 36.7%; dried and fresh fruits & nuts reached RMB 290 million, an increase of 164%; and vegetables and edible fungi reached RMB 230 million, an increase of 9%.

 

(II) Dairy products, hops, alcohol and beverages were the main imported products.

 

China imported RMB 760 million of food from CEE from January to May 2025, a decrease of 19.1%, accounting for 1% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China in the same period. Among them, dairy products reached RMB 300 million, an increase of 30.8%; hops reached RMB 170 million, an increase of 86.8%; alcohol and beverages reached RMB 56.287 million, a decrease of 18.2%.

 

(III) Poland, Greece and the Czech Republic were the top three trading partners.

 

From January to May 2025, China's import and export value of food to Poland, Greece and Czech Republic reached RMB 1.17 billion, RMB 440 million and RMB 390 million respectively, with an increase of 14.4%, 24.6% and 43.1% respectively, accounting for 36.5%, 13.8% and 12.3% of China's total import and export value of food from CEE in the same period.
