An Overview of Food Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in November 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of food trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 850 million in November 2023, an increase of 19.8% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, food exported to CEE accounted for RMB 440 million, with a decrease of 11.7%; food imported from CEE reached RMB 410 million, with an increase of 95.2%.


The main features of food trade between China and CEE in November 2023 are as follows:


(I) Edible aquatic products, dried and fresh fruits and nuts, vegetables and edible mushrooms were the main exported products.


In November 2023, China exported RMB 440 million of foods to CEE, with a decrease of 11.7%, accounting for 0.8% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China in the same month. Among them, the export of edible aquatic products was RMB 60.441 million, with a decrease of 15.2%; the export of dried and fresh fruits and nuts was RMB 51.031 million, with an increase of 71%; the export of vegetables and edible mushrooms was RMB 49.119 million, with an increase of 70.7%.


(II) Corn, sunflower seeds, and dairy products were the main imported products.


In November 2023, China imported RMB 410 million of foods from CEE, with an increase of 95.2%, accounting for 2.2% of the gross import value from CEE to China in the same month. Among them, the import of corn was RMB 120 million, with no import in the same period last year; the import of sunflower seeds was RMB 87.126 million, with an increase of 449.8%; the import of dairy products were RMB 84.487 million, with a decrease of 16.2%.


(III) Poland, Bulgaria, and Greece were the top three food trading partners.


In November 2023, China's food imports from and exports to Poland, Bulgaria, and Greece amounted to RMB 290 million, RMB 270 million, and RMB 78.414 million respectively, with an increase of 10.2%, an increase of 97.3% and a decrease of 8.3% respectively. They respectively account for 34.4%, 32.2% and 9.2% of the gross value of foods imported from and exported to CEE in the same month.
