Customs statistics show that the total value of food trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 840 million in May 2023, an increase of 35.3% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, food exported to CEE accounted for RMB 340 million, a decrease of 2.2%; Food imported from CEE reached RMB 500 million, an increase of 81.4%.
The main features of food trade between China and CEE in May 2023 are as follows:
(I) Edible aquatic products, canned products, and meat were the main exported products.
In May 2023, China exported RMB 340 million of foods to CEE, a decrease of 2.2%, accounting for 0.5% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China in the same month. Among them, the export of edible aquatic products was RMB 58.741 million, a decrease of 15.8%; the export of canned products was RMB 43.534 million, an increase of 110.2%; the export of meat was RMB 30.216 million, an increase of 7.8%.
(II) Corn, dairy products, and sunflower seeds were the main imported products.
In May 2023, China imported RMB 500 million of foods from CEE, up 81.4%, accounting for 2.9% of the gross import value from CEE to China in the same month. Among them, the export of corn was RMB 240 million, an increase of 179.4%; the export of dairy products were RMB 99.63 million, a decrease of 5.1%; the export of sunflower seeds were RMB 77.525 million, an increase of 13 times.
(III) Bulgaria, Poland and Greece were the top three food trading partners.
In May 2023, China's food imports from and exports to Bulgaria, Poland and Greece amounted to RMB 350 million, RMB 260 million and RMB 81.46 million, up 188.4%, 2%, and 10.8%, respectively, accounting for 41.4%, 30.4%, and 9.7% of the gross value of foods imported from and exported to CEE in the same month.
