An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in February 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 58.93 billion in February 2023, a year-on-year decrease (the same below) of 9.5%. Among them, the value of exports to CEE reached RMB 43.73 billion, a decrease of 11.9%; The value of imports from CEE reached RMB 15.2 billion, a decrease of 1.6%.

 

From January to February 2023, the total value of bilateral trade between China and CEE was RMB 145.33 billion, an increase of 3.3%. Among them, those exported to CEE reached RMB 112.02 billion, an increase of 2.4%; those imported from CEE reached RMB 33.31 billion, an increase of 6.5%.

 

The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in February 2023 are as follows:

 

(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.

 

In February 2023, China exported RMB 33.08 billion of mechanical and electrical products to CEE, a decrease of 6.3%, accounting for 75.6% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of electrical equipment reached RMB 5.42 billion, an increase of 42.6%, and value of mobile phones reached RMB 3.39 billion, an increase of 80.9%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products amounted to RMB 4.08 billion, a decrease of 43.6%, accounting for 9.3%. Among them, the value of garments and accessories reached RMB 1.05 billion, a decrease of 48.3%; the value of textile yarn, fabrics and their products reached RMB 0.77 billion, a decrease of 51.5%. The export of steel products reached RMB 540 million, an increase of 63.3%, accounting for 1.2%; the export of basic organic chemicals reached RMB 510 million, a decrease of 29%. In addition, the export of agricultural products reached RMB 410 million, an increase of 22.3%; Food exports reached RMB 220 million, an increase of 27.8%.

 

(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, copper materials were the main imported products.

 

In February 2023, China imported RMB 10.15 billion of mechanical and electrical products from CEE, down 9%, accounting for 66.8% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of passenger cars reached RMB 2.22 billion, a decrease of 41.7%; the value of auto parts reached RMB 1.98 billion, an increase of 1.3%. In the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 1.14 billion, an increase of 56.1%, accounting for 7.5%; the value of imported unwrought copper and copper material reached RMB 600 million, a decrease of 32.8%, accounting for 3.9%. In addition, the import of agricultural products amounted to RMB 490 million, an increase of 168%, accounting for 3.2%; the import of food totaled RMB 330 million, an increase of 114.9%, accounting for 2.2%.

 

(III) Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary were the top three trading partners.

 

In February 2023, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary amounted to RMB 17.0 billion, RMB 11.14 billion, and RMB 7.57 billion respectively, a decrease of 17% and an increase of 16.4% and 7.6% respectively, accounting for 28.8%, 18.9%, and 12.8% respectively of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE in the same month.
