An Overview of Food Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in the First Three Quarters of 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of food trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 6.42 billion in the first three quarters 2023, a year-on-year increase (the same below) of 36.3%, Among them, food exported to CEE accounted for RMB 2.98 billion, an increase of 11.9%; Food imported from CEE reached RMB 3.44 billion, an increase of 67.9%.


The main features of food trade between China and CEE in the first three quarters of 2023 are as follows:


(I) Edible aquatic products, canned products, vegetables and edible mushrooms were the main exported products.


In the first three quarters of 2023, China's exports of food to CEE reached RMB 2.98 billion, an increase of 11.9%, accounting for 0.5% of China's total exports to CEE during the same period. Among them, edible aquatic products were RMB 550 million, an increase of 5.1%; canned products were RMB 330 million, an increase of 90%; vegetables and edible mushrooms were RMB 310 million, an increase of 34.3%.


(II) Corn, dairy products, and sunflower seeds were the main imported products.


In the first three quarters of 2023, China's imports of food from CEE reached RMB 3.44 billion, an increase of 67.9%, accounting for 2.3% of China's total imports from CEE during the same period. Among them, corn reached RMB 1.5 billion, up 368.4%; dairy products reached RMB 690 million, down 13.7%; sunflower seeds reached RMB 1.5 billion, up 238.2%.


(III) Bulgaria, Poland and Greece were the top three food trading partners.


In the first three quarters of 2023, the value of China's food imported from and exported to Bulgaria, Poland and Greece reached RMB 2.33 billion, RMB 2.1 billion, and RMB 540 million respectively, with an increase of 206.7%, 2.4% and 1.1%, accounting for 36.2%, 32.7% and 8.4% of the total value of China's food imported from and exported to CEE in the same period.
