An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in July 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 81.4 billion in July 2023, a year-on-year decrease (the same below) of 3.3%. Among them, the value of exports to CEE reached RMB 63.98 billion, a decrease of 4%; The value of imports from CEE reached RMB 17.42 billion, a decrease of 0.8%.


In the first seven months of 2023, the total value of bilateral trade between China and CEE was RMB 543.36 billion, an increase of 4.5%. Among them, the value of exports to CEE reached RMB 425.19 billion, an increase of 6.4%; the value of imports from CEE reached RMB 118.17 billion, a decrease of 1.5%.

The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in July 2023 are as follows:


(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.


In July 2023, China exported RMB 42.22 billion of mechanical and electrical products to CEE, a decrease of 2.3%, accounting for 66% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of electrical equipment & material reached RMB 6 billion, a decrease of 12.8%; the value of automatic data processing equipment and its parts and components reached RMB 4.21 billion, a decrease of 17.6%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products amounted to RMB 12.12 billion, a decrease of 10.7%, accounting for 18.9%. Among them, the value of garments and accessories reached RMB 4.4 billion, a decrease of 18.8%; the value of textile yarn, fabrics and their products reached RMB 2 billion, a decrease of 8%. In addition, the export of agricultural products was RMB 880 million, an increase of 32.9%, accounting for 1.4%; the export of steel was RMB 840 million, an increase of 6.1%, accounting for 1.3%; the export of basic organic chemicals was RMB 610 million, a decrease of 15.6%, and the export of food was RMB 320 million, an increase of 6.4%.


(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, copper materials were the main imported products.


In July 2023, China imported RMB 11.93 billion of mechanical and electrical products from CEE, a decrease of 11.8%, accounting for 68.5% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of auto parts reached RMB 2.47 billion, an increase of 2.3%; the value of automobiles reached RMB 2.25 billion, a decrease of 52.1%. In the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 1.13 billion, an increase of 95.7%, accounting for 6.5%; the value of imported unwrought copper and copper material reached RMB 880 million, an increase of 172.5%, accounting for 5%. In addition, the import of agricultural products amounted to RMB 740 million, an increase of 89.6%, accounting for 4.3%; the import of food totaled RMB 690 million, an increase of 275.5%, accounting for 3.9%.


(III) Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary were the top three trading partners.


In July 2023, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary amounted to RMB 26.09 billion, RMB 12.86 billion, and RMB 8.63 billion respectively, a decrease of 4.7%, 7.5%, and 6.9% respectively, accounting for 32.1%, 15.8% and 10.6% respectively of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE in the same month.
