An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in August 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 79.17 billion in August 2023, a year-on-year decrease (the same below) of 10.8%. Among them, the value of exports to CEE reached RMB 62.62 billion, a decrease of 9.9%; The value of imports from CEE reached RMB 16.55 billion, a decrease of 14.2%.

 

In the first eight months of 2023, the total value of bilateral trade between China and CEE was RMB 621.99 billion, an increase of 2.3%. Among them, the value of exports to CEE reached RMB 487.18 billion, an increase of 4%; The value of imports from CEE reached RMB 134.81 billion, a decrease of 3.2%.

 

The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in August 2023 are as follows:

 

(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.

 

In August 2023, China exported RMB 42.14 billion of mechanical and electrical products to CEE, a decrease of 12.6%, accounting for 67.3% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of electrical equipment & material reached RMB 5.64 billion, a decrease of 18.9%; the value of automatic data processing equipment and its parts and components reached RMB 4.51 billion, a decrease of 8.3%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products reached RMB 11.34 billion, with an increase of 2.6%, accounting for 18.1% of the gross export value from China to CEE. Among them, the value of garments and accessories reached RMB 3.76 billion, with a decrease of 8%; the value of textile yarn, fabrics and their products reached RMB 1.89 billion, with an increase of 5.8%. In addition, the export of agricultural products was RMB 820 million, with a decrease of 16.7%, accounting for 1.3%; the export of steel was RMB 810 million, with an increase of 19%, accounting for 1.3%; the export of basic organic chemicals was RMB 610 million, with an increase of 12.7%; and the export of food was RMB 300 million, with a decrease of 17.2%.

 

(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, and agricultural products were the main imported products.

 

In August 2023, China imported RMB 10.92 billion of mechanical and electrical products from CEE, a decrease of 23.8%, accounting for 66% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the import value of auto parts totaled RMB 2.28 billion, which decreased by 11.4%; The import value of electrical equipment & material totaled RMB 2.16 billion, which increased by 10.7%. Over the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 1.38 billion, an increase of 39.2%, accounting for 8.4%. In addition, the import of agricultural products amounted to RMB 710 million, an increase of 77.4%, accounting for 4.3%; the import of food totaled RMB 540 million, an increase of 150.8%, accounting for 3.3%.

 

(III) Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary were the top three trading partners.

 

In August 2023, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary amounted to RMB 26.37 billion, RMB 11.85 billion, and RMB 8.59 billion respectively, a decrease of 4.4%, 18.4%, and 11.7% respectively, accounting for 33.3%, 15% and 10.9% respectively of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE in the same month.
