An Overview of Food Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in January 2024

Customs statistics show that the total value of food trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 630 million in January 2024, an increase of 7.3% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, food exported to CEE accounted for RMB 440 million, an increase of 16.7%; Food imported from CEE reached RMB 190 million, a decrease of 9.6%.


The main features of food trade between China and CEE in January 2024 are as follows:


(I) Edible aquatic products, vegetables, and meat were the main exported products.


In January 2024, China exported RMB 440 million of foods to CEE, an increase of 16.7%, accounting for 0.6% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China in the same month. Among them, the value of edible aquatic products reached RMB 100 million, an increase of 25.6%; the value of vegetables and edible mushrooms reached RMB 44.032 million, an increase of 33.2%; the value of meat (including offal) reached RMB 37.451 million, an increase of 45.1%.


(II) Sunflower seeds, dairy products and edible vegetable oil were the main imported products.


In January 2024, China imported RMB 190 million of foods from CEE, an decrease of 9.6%, accounting for 1.2% of the gross import value from CEE to China in the same month. Among them, the value of sunflower seeds reached RMB 43.24 million, an increase of 20%; the value of dairy products reached RMB 34.371 million, a decrease of 59.1%; and the value of edible vegetable oil reached RMB 31.683 million, an increase of 10.6 times.


(III) Poland, Bulgaria, and Greece were the top three food trading partners.


In January 2024, China's imports from and exports to Poland, Bulgaria, and Greece amounted to RMB 210 million, RMB 99.874 million, and RMB 75.239 million respectively, with a decrease of 13.3%, an increase of 81.9% and a decrease of 15.4% respectively. They respectively account for 33.9%, 15.9% and 11.9% of the gross value of foods imported from and exported to CEE in the same month.
