An Overview of Food Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in May 2024

Customs statistics show that the total value of food trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 540 million in May 2024, a year-on-year decrease of 36.3% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, the value of food exported to CEE accounted for RMB 390 million, an increase of 14.5%; the value of food imported from CEE reached RMB 150 million, a decrease of 70.1%.

 

The main features of food trade between China and CEE in May 2024 are as follows:

 

(I) Edible aquatic products, meat, and vegetables were the main exported products.

 

In May 2024, China exported RMB 390 million of foods to CEE, an increase of 14.5%, accounting for 0.6% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China in the same month. Among them, the value of edible aquatic products were RMB 82.097 million, an increase of 39.8%; the value of meat (including offal) was RMB 43.214 million, an increase of 43%; the value of vegetables and edible mushrooms were RMB 35.755 million, an increase of 20.8%.

 

(II) Dairy products, miscellaneous food and edible vegetable oil were the main imported products.

 

In May 2024, China imported RMB 150 million of foods from CEE, a decrease of 70.1%, accounting for 0.8% of the gross import value from CEE to China in the same month. Among them, the value of dairy products were RMB 50.14 million, a decrease of 49.7%; the value of miscellaneous food was RMB 20.324 million, an increase of 19%; and the value of edible vegetable oil was RMB 17.71 million, an increase of 54.6%.

 

(III) Poland, Greece and Romania were the top three food trading partners.

 

In May 2024, China's imports from and exports to Poland, Greece and Romania reached RMB 200 million, RMB 78.498 million and RMB 56.196 million respectively, with a decrease of 23.2%, a decrease of 3.6% and an increase of 217.5% respectively, accounting for 36.7%, 14.6% and 10.5% of the gross value of food imported from and exported to CEE in the same month.
