An Overview of Agricultural Products Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in the First Half of 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of agricultural products between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 7.61 billion in the first half of 2023, a year-on-year increase (the same below) of 34.7%. Among them, the export of agricultural products to CEE reached RMB 4.39 billion, with an increase of 23.7%; the import of agricultural products from CEE reached RMB 3.22 billion, with an increase of 53.2%.

 

The main features of the agricultural products trade between China and CEE in the first half of 2023 are as follows:

 

(I) E-cigarette cartridges (nicotine-containing), edible aquatic products and canned vegetables were the main exported products.

 

In the first half of 2023, China exported RMB 4.39 billion of agricultural products to CEE, with an increase of 23.7%, accounting for 1.2% of the gross export value from China to CEE over the same period. Among them, the export of E-cigarette cartridges (nicotine-containing)  reached RMB 1.27 billion, with an increase of 205.1%; the export of edible aquatic products reached RMB 340 million, with an increase of 1.5%; the export of canned vegetables reached RMB 230 million, with an increase of 189.1%.

 

(II) Oil cake of sunflower seeds, corn and dairy products were the main imported products.

 

In the first half of 2023, China imported RMB 3.22 billion of agricultural products from CEE, with an increase of 53.2%, accounting for 3.2% of the gross import value from CEE to China over the same period. Among them, the value of oil cake  of sunflower seeds reached RMB 910 million, with an increase of 108.5%; the value of corn reached RMB 720 million, with an increase of 144.6%; the value of dairy products reached RMB 470 million, with a decrease of 0.9%.

 

(III) Bulgaria, Poland and Greece were the top three agricultural products trading partners.

 

In the first half of 2023, China's imports and exports of agricultural products from and to Bulgaria, Poland and Greece were RMB 2.37 billion, RMB 2.3 billion and RMB 580 million respectively, with an increase of 96.2%, 29% and 26.9% respectively, accounting for 31.1%, 30.2% and 7.6% of China's gross import-export value of agricultural products from and to CEE over the same period.
