An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in January 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 86.4 billion in January 2023, an increase of 14.4% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, those exported to CEE reached RMB 68.3 billion, an increase of 14.4%; those imported from CEE reached RMB 18.1 billion, an increase of 14.4%.

 

The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in January 2023 are as follows:

 

(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.

 

In January 2023, China exported RMB 45.31 billion of mechanical and electrical products to CEE, an increase of 13.8%, accounting for 66.3% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of electrical equipment & material reached RMB 6.08 billion, an increase of 35.1%; the value of automatic data processing equipment and its parts and components reached RMB 3.96 billion, a decrease of 11%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products reached RMB 12.56 billion, with an increase of 7.7%, accounting for 18.4% of the gross export value from China to CEEC. Among them, the value of garments and accessories reached RMB 3.38 billion, a decrease of 0.6%; the value of textile yarn, fabrics and their products reached RMB 2.44 billion, a decrease of 7.7%. The export of agricultural products reached RMB 800 million, an increase of 56%, accounting for 1.2%. In addition, the export of basic organic chemicals was RMB 740 million, an increase of 2%, accounting for 1.1%; the export of food was RMB 380 million, an increase of 27.6%.

 

(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, and agricultural products were the main imported products.

 

In January 2023, China imported RMB 13.09 billion of mechanical & electrical products from CEE, an increase of 20.5%, accounting for 72.3% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China in the same month (the same below). Among them, the value of passenger cars reached RMB 4.7 billion, with an increase of 237.2%; the value of auto parts reached RMB 2.27 billion, with a decrease of 22.8%. In the same period, the import of metal ore and sand was RMB 1.39 billion, with an increase of 216.5%, accounting for 7.7%; the import of agricultural products was RMB 520 million, with an increase of 4%, accounting for 2.9%; the import of unwrought copper and copper material was RMB 490 million, with a decrease of 37.3%, accounting for 2.7%. In addition, imports of wood and its products amounted to RMB 370 million, down 34%, accounting for 2%; imports of food amounted to RMB 210 million, down 34.1%, accounting for 1.2%.

 

(III) Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece were the top three trading partners.

 

In January 2023, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece amounted to RMB 26.72 billion, RMB 12.99 billion and RMB 9.87 billion respectively, an increase of 12%, a decrease of 0.6%, and an increase of 23.8% respectively, accounting for 30.9%, 15% and 11.4% of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE in the same month, respectively.
