An Overview of Food Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in November 2024

Customs statistics show that the total value of food trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 730 million in November 2024, a decrease of 14.1% compared to the same period last year (the same below). Among them, food exported to CEE accounted for RMB 540 million, an increase of 21.7%, while food imported from CEE reached RMB 190 million, a decrease of 53%.

 

The main features of food trade between China and CEE in November 2024 are as follows:

 

(I) The primary exports consist of edible aquatic products, dried and fresh fruits and nuts, vegetables, and edible fungi.

 

In November 2024, China exported RMB 540 million of food to CEE, an increase of 21.7%, accounting for 0.8% of the gross value of exports from China to CEE in the same month. Among them, the value of exported edible aquatic products was RMB 110 million, an increase of 79.2%; that of the exported dried and fresh fruits and nuts was RMB 78.67 million, an increase of 54.2%; that of the exported vegetables and edible mushrooms was RMB 48.474 million, a decrease of 1.3%.

 

(II) The primary imports consist of dairy products, edible vegetable oil, and sweet biscuits.

 

In November 2024, China imported RMB 190 million of food from CEE, a decrease of 53%, accounting for 1% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China in the same month. Among them, the value of imported dairy products was RMB 53.674 million, a decrease of 36.5%; that of imported edible vegetable oil was RMB 25.362 million, up 25%; and that of imported sweet biscuits was RMB 119.745 million, a 14.9-fold increase.

 

(III) Poland, Greece, and Bulgaria rank as China’s top three food trade partners.

 

In November 2024, China's imports from and exports to Poland, Greece, and Bulgaria amounted to RMB 310 million, RMB 84.524 million and RMB 80.093 million respectively, with an increase of 7.2%, an increase of 7.8% and a decrease of 70.7% respectively, accounting for 43%, 11.6% and 11% of China's total food trade with CEE during the month.
