An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in April 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 79.29 billion in April 2023, an increase of 14.6% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, the value of exports to CEE reached RMB 62.42 billion, with an increase of 24.9%; the value of imports from CEE reached RMB 16.87 billion, with a decrease of 12.2%.


From January to April 2023, the total value of bilateral trade between China and CEE was RMB 308.42 billion, an increase of 10.9%. Among them, those exported to CEE reached RMB 241.13 billion, an increase of 13.8%; those imported from CEE reached RMB 67.29 billion, an increase of 1.7%.


The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in April 2023 are as follows:


(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.


In April of 2023, China exported RMB 43.83 billion of mechanical and electrical products to CEE, an increase of 27.8%, accounting for 70.2% of the gross export value (the same below) from China to CEE in the same period. Among them, the value of electrical equipment & materials reached RMB 5.71 billion, an increase of 23.4%; electronic components reached RMB 3.65 billion, an increase of 19.2%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products reached RMB 9.76 billion, with an increase of 22.6%, accounting for 15.6% of the gross export value from China to CEE. Among them, the value of garments and accessories reached RMB 2.43 billion, a decrease of 0.1%; the value of textile yarn, fabrics and their products reached RMB 1.98 billion, a decrease of 31.1%. In addition, the export of steel was RMB 900 million, up 55.6%, accounting for 1.4%; the export of agricultural products was RMB 760 million, up 38.1%, accounting for 1.2%; the export of food was RMB 340 million, up 25.7%.


(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, copper materials were the main imported products.


In April 2023, China imported RMB 11.96 billion of mechanical & electrical products from CEE, with a decrease of 17.9%, accounting for 70.9% of the gross import value (the same below) from CEE to China over the same period. Among them, the value of passenger cars reached RMB 3.74 billion, with a decrease of 43.6%; the value of auto parts reached RMB 1.95 billion, with a decrease of 11.8%. In the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 930 million, an increase of 9.1%, accounting for 5.5%; the value of imported unwrought copper and copper material reached RMB 600 million, an increase of 34.4%, accounting for 5.5%. In addition, the import of agricultural products amounted to RMB 670 million, an increase of 100.7%, accounting for 4%; imported food totaled RMB 360 million, an increase of 86.1%.


(III) Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece were the top three trading partners.


In April 2023, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece were RMB 25.88 billion, RMB 11.62 billion and RMB 9.08 billion respectively, with an increase of 30.9%, 9.5% and 20.5% respectively, accounting for 32.6%, 14.7% and 11.5% of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE over the same period.
