An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in April 2024

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 84.56 billion in April 2024, an increase of 7.3% over the same period last year (the same below). Among them, those exported to CEE reached RMB 64.93 billion, with an increase of 5.2%; those imported from CEE reached RMB 19.63 billion, with an increase of 15.1%.


From January to April 2024, the total value of bilateral trade between China and CEE was RMB 311.83 billion, with an increase of 2.3%. Among them, those exported to CEE reached RMB 243.57 billion, with an increase of 2.6%; those imported from CEE reached RMB 68.26 billion, with an increase of 1.2%.


The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in April 2024 are as follows:


(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.


In April 2024, China exported RMB 45.5 billion of mechanical and electrical products to CEE, with an increase of 4.7%, accounting for 70.1% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of automatic data processing equipment and its parts and components reached RMB 4.74 billion, with an increase of 43.2%; the value of electrical equipment & material reached RMB 4.67 billion, with a decrease of 17.8%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products reached RMB 10.31 billion, with an increase of 8.8%, accounting for 15.9%. Among them, the value of textile and garment reached RMB 4.39 billion, with an increase of 1.1%; the value of plastic products reached RMB 1.9 billion, with an increase of 21.8%. In addition, the value of exported agricultural products reached RMB 750 million, with a decrease of 0.3%, accounting for 1.2%; the value of exported foods reached RMB 440 million, with an increase of 28.4%.


(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, and refined oil products were the main imported products.


In April 2024, China imported RMB 13.51 billion of mechanical and electrical products from CEE, with an increase of 11.5%, accounting for 68.8% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the import value of auto parts totaled RMB 3.64 billion, with an increase of 88%; the import value of electrical equipment & material totaled RMB 2.37 billion, with an increase of 13.8%. In the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 1.29 billion, with an increase of 40.6%, accounting for 6.6%; the value of imported refined oil products reached RMB 800 million, with an increase of 90.7%, accounting for 4.1%. In addition, the value of imported agricultural products reached RMB 340 million, with a decrease of 49.5%, accounting for 1.7%; the value of imported foods reached RMB 220 million, with a decrease of 38.6%, accounting for 1.1%.


(III) Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary were the top three trading partners.


In April 2024, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary amounted to RMB 26.75 billion, RMB 14.07 billion, and RMB 9.4 billion respectively, with an increase of 3.7%, 21.3%, and 24.2% respectively, accounting for 31.6%, 16.6% and 11.1% respectively of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE in the same month.
