An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in the First Half of 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 461.97 billion in the first half of 2023, a year-on-year increase (the same below) of 6.1%. Among them, the value of exports to CEE reached RMB 361.24 billion, with an increase of 8.4%; the value of imports from CEE reached RMB 100.73 billion, with a decrease of 1.7%.

 

The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in the first half of 2023 are as follows:

 

(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.

 

In the first half of 2023, China exported RMB 249.03 billion of mechanical and electrical products to CEE, with an increase of 9.9%, accounting for 68.9% of the gross export value (the same below) from China to CEE over the same period. Among them, the value of electrical equipment & material reached RMB 35.6 billion, with an increase of 28.7%; the value of automatic data processing equipment and its parts and components reached RMB 22.73 billion, with a decrease of 9.6%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products reached RMB 58.71 billion, with an increase of 3.8%, accounting for 16.3% of the gross export value from China to CEE. Among them, the value of garments and accessories reached RMB 17.32 billion, with a decrease of 7.8%; the value of textile yarn, fabrics and their products reached RMB 11.28 billion, with an increase of 3.6%. In addition, the export of steel was RMB 5.25 billion, with an increase of 45.3%, accounting for 1.5%; the export of agricultural products was RMB 4.39 billion, with an increase of 23.7%, accounting for 1.2%; the export of food was RMB 2.01 billion, with an increase of 18.9%.

 

(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, copper materials were the main imported products.

 

In the first half of 2023, China imported RMB 70 billion of mechanical and electrical products from CEE, with a decrease of 4.7%, accounting for 69.5% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China (the same below) over the same period. Among them, the value of passenger cars reached RMB 18.88 billion, with a decrease of 12.7%; the value of auto parts reached RMB 12.94 billion, with a decrease of 8.3%. Over the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 7.32 billion, an increase of 45.4%, accounting for 7.3%. In addition, the import of agricultural products amounted to RMB 3.22 billion, with an increase of 53.2%, accounting for 3.2%; imported food totaled RMB 1.98 billion, with an increase of 39.8%.

 

(III) Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece were the top three trading partners.

 

In the first half of 2023, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece were RMB 144.67 billion, RMB 71.95 billion and RMB 50.97 billion respectively, with an increase of 6.9%, 0.6% and 11.4% respectively, accounting for 31.3%, 15.6% and 11% of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE over the same period.
