An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in January 2024

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 84.61 billion in January 2024, with a year-on-year decrease (the same below) of 0.9%. Among them, the value of exports to CEE reached RMB 68.58 billion, an increase of 2.1%; the value of imports from CEE reached RMB 16.03 billion, a decrease of 11.8%.


The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in January 2024 are as follows:


(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.


In January 2024, China exported RMB 46.2 billion of mechanical and electrical products to CEE, an increase of 3.4%, accounting for 67.4% of the gross value of exports to CEE from China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of electrical equipment & material reached RMB 4.47 billion, a decrease of 23.7%; the value of automatic data processing equipment and its parts and components reached RMB 4.16 billion, an increase of 5.4%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products reached RMB 13.15 billion, with an increase of 7.9%, accounting for 19.2% of the gross export value from China to CEE. Among them, the value of textile and garment reached RMB 5.44 billion, a decrease of 5.1%; the value of shoes and boots reached RMB 2.1 billion, an increase of 1.1%. The export of agricultural products reached RMB 820 million, an increase of 2.7%, accounting for 1.2%. In addition, the export of basic organic chemicals reached RMB 710 million, a decrease of 4.5%, accounting for 1%; the export of food reached RMB 440 million, an increase of 16.7%.


(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, copper materials were the main imported products.


In January 2024, China imported RMB 11.17 billion of mechanical and electrical products from CEE, a decrease of 14.6%, accounting for 69.7% of the gross import value from CEE to China (the same below) in the same month. Among them, the value of passenger cars (including chassis) reached RMB 2.78 billion, a decrease of 40.9%; the value of auto parts reached RMB 2.14 billion, a decrease of 5.7%. In the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 1.27 billion, a decrease of 13.5%, accounting for 7.9% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China; The value of imported unwrought copper and copper material reached RMB 1.02 billion, an increase of 106.9%, accounting for 6.4% of the gross value of imports from CEE to China. The import of agricultural products reached RMB 380 million, a decrease of 26.4%, accounting for 2.4%; in addition, the import of wood and its products reached RMB 240 million, a decrease of 36.2%, accounting for 1.5%; the import of medical materials and drugs reached RMB 200 million, an increase of 23.7%, accounting for 1.2%. The import of food reached RMB 190 million, a decrease of 9.6%, accounting for 1.2%.


(III) Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece were the top three trading partners.


In January 2024, China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic and Greece amounted to RMB 26.46 billion, RMB 13.31 billion and RMB 9.27 billion respectively, an increase of 0.9%, an increase of 2.5%, and a decrease of 1.8% respectively, accounting for 31.3%, 15.7% and 11% of China's gross import-export value from and to CEE in the same month, respectively.
