An Overview of Bilateral Trade between China and Central and Eastern European Countries in 2023

Customs statistics show that the total value of bilateral trade between China and Central and Eastern European countries (hereinafter referred to as CEE) was RMB 941.52 billion in 2023, with an increase of 2.8% over 2022 (the same below). Among them, those exported to CEE reached RMB 729.85 billion, with an increase of 2.9%; those imported from CEE reached RMB 211.67 billion, with an increase of 2.5%.


The main features of bilateral trade between China and CEE in 2023 are as follows:


(I) Mechanical & electrical products and labor-intensive products were the main exported products.


In 2023, China exported RMB 502.62 billion of mechanical & electrical products to CEE, with an increase of 3.3%, accounting for 68.9% of the gross export value (the same below) from China to CEE over the same period. Among them, the value of electrical equipment & material reached RMB 66.84 billion, with an increase of 0.2%; the value of automatic data processing equipment and its parts and components reached RMB 50.2 billion, with a decrease of 7.3%. Over the same period, the export of labor-intensive products reached RMB 121.08 billion, with an increase of 3.3%, accounting for 16.6% of the gross export value from China to CEE. Among them, the value of textile and garment reached RMB 58.2 billion, with a decrease of 3.5%; the value of plastic products reached RMB 17.81 billion, with an increase of 17.6%. In addition, the value of exported agricultural products reached RMB 9.7 billion, with an increase of 15.2%, accounting for 1.3%; the value of exported foods reached RMB 4.37 billion, with an increase of 13.8%.


(II) Mechanical & electrical products, metallic mineral ores, copper materials were the main imported products.


In 2023, China imported RMB 149.6 billion of mechanical & electrical products from CEE, with a decrease of 0.1%, accounting for 70.7% of the gross import value (the same below) from CEE to China over the same period. Among them, the value of passenger cars reached RMB 41.55 billion, with a decrease of 4.5%; the value of auto parts reached RMB 27.51 billion, with a decrease of 3.8%. In the same period, the value of imported metal ore and ore sand reached RMB 12.77 billion, with an increase of 30.3%, accounting for 6%; the value of unwrought copper and copper material reached RMB 8.51 billion, with an increase of 15.2%, accounting for 4%. In addition, the import of agricultural products reached RMB 6.79 billion, with an increase of 48.5%, accounting for 3.2%; the import of food totaled RMB 4.39 billion, with an increase of 61.7%, accounting for 2.1%.


(III) Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary were the top three trading partners.


In 2023, the value of China's imports from and exports to Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary reached RMB 295.5 billion, RMB 151.37 billion and RMB 102.15 billion respectively, with an increase of 3.4%, a decrease of 4.1% and 1.1%, accounting for 31.4%, 16.1% and 10.8% of the total value of China's imports from and exports to CEE in the same period.
